DESCRIPTION:

SUMMARY

The Process Control Engineer configures, optimizes, and maintains the refinery’s control systems including DCS, APC, and other stand-alone controls to ensure that safety, regulatory, production, and optimization objectives are met. This includes support of regulatory and advance control strategies.

Other responsibilities include supporting alarm management, networking, system security, process information applications, and instrument reliability.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Participates and promotes all aspects of the refinery safety program.  Demonstrates leadership to the workplace safety and health of employees and contractors through personal engagement and sound decisions.
  2. Communicates effectively with operations, maintenance, process and project engineering, vendors, contractors, etc. to address problems, coordinate work being performed, and discuss ideas.
  3. Supports DCS and other stand-alone control systems / operator interfaces including point configuration, loop tuning, graphics design, and system maintenance.
  4. Supports advanced controls including evaluation and development of APC applications, calculation of inferred properties, model testing, and system maintenance.
  5. Supports alarm management and other interface applications including configuration and maintenance.
  6. Develops, implements, and optimizes control strategies to increase process safety, operability, and profitability.
  7. Evaluates controls and instrument reliability issues and then implements solutions or recommends paths forward.
  8. Assists with support of system networking and security including monitoring and maintenance of domains, network equipment, application of system patches and updates, etc.
  9. Provides support during process startups, shutdowns, and upsets as needed.
  10. Works closely with project engineering to design, implement, and startup projects involving control systems.
  11. Participates in or leads refinery incident investigation teams for root cause analysis and corrective actions.
  12. Trains and develops operators, technicians, and engineers on control systems operation and maintenance.
  13. Develops and maintains documentation of controls, alarms, calculations, training, interfaces, configuration, policies, procedures, etc.
  14. Drives and / or participates in the MOC process including initiation, evaluations, completing assigned work, and startup safety reviews.
  15. Participates in process hazard analysis reviews as needed.
  16. Backfills the responsibilities of other process control engineers as needed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or equivalent experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement practical solutions and projects.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong people interaction skills.
  • Strong problem-solving skills.
  • Knowledge of process controls regarding use, design, installation, and configuration.
  • Knowledge of control system maintenance practices.
  • Legally authorized to work in the United States on a regular full-time basis without restrictions.
  • Must have a Valid Driver’s License
  • Relevant work experience in a manufacturing/operating plant environment
  • Must have or be willing and able, with or without reasonable accommodation, to obtain a TWIC card

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical or Electrical Engineering.
  • Direct experience as a process or controls engineer supporting control systems in a refinery or chemical manufacturing environment.
  • Direct experience with configuration of Honeywell Experion DCS.
  • Direct experience with configuration of Aspentech DMCplus advance process controls.
  • Direct experience with field instrumentation.
  • Proficient in MS Excel, Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
